Question 1: What is Chiropractic?

Answer 1:  Chiropractic is a health care profession that diagnoses, treats and helps prevent disorders and conditions related to the spine, nervous system, and musculoskeletal system. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms and legs, and headaches.  Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary, and lifestyle counseling.

Question 2:  What does a chiropractor do?

Answer 2:  The most common therapeutic procedure performed by doctors of chiropractic is known as “spinal manipulation or chiropractic adjustment.”  The purpose of the adjustment is to restore joint mobility, neural integrity, circulation in the region of the joint and improve soft tissue flexibility. Chiropractors also utilize other therapeutic procedures such as soft tissue techniques, exercise, nutrition counseling, ultrasound, and muscle stimulation to name a few.

Question 3:  How does chiropractic work?

Answer 3:  Injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function in the patient. The chiropractic adjustment restores joint and soft tissue mobility, relieves pain and muscle tightness, improves neural integrity to the joint and the organ the nerve supplies, and allows for tissue healing. Because of the relationship of the spine and the nervous system, the chiropractic adjustment, along with lifestyle modification and nutritional counseling, can affect other conditions that are not musculoskeletal in origin, for example, reflux or constipation.

Question 4:  Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?

Answer 4:  Typically, an adjustment does not hurt. Occasionally, you may experience some stiffness or soreness much like the day after you start a new exercise program.  The application of ice to the sore are usually relieves the discomfort.

Question 5:  Is it true that once you go to a chiropractor, you will always have to go?

Answer 5:  Treatment plans will vary depending on several factors.  We have patients that seek care for acute injuries, chronic injuries, or for preventative care.  Dr. Taylor takes several factors into account when determining your treatment plan.  He looks at your lifestyle and takes into account all of the environmental factors that are affecting your health.

Question 6:  Is chiropractic care appropriate for all ages?

Answer 6:   Yes. Chiropractic is beneficial for people of all ages because health can be improved by assessing the spine. The adjusting techniques used by Dr. Taylor vary based on the age of the patient and the patient’s physical condition. For example the same technique would not be used to adjust an infant that would be used to adjust a college age male. Dr. Taylor utilizes many techniques and will use the technique that is the best for you.

Question 7:  Is chiropractic care covered by insurance?

Answer 7:   Many insurance plans offer coverage for chiropractic care. Whether or not your plan includes chiropractic varies from plan to plan. We suggest that you contact your insurance company with any questions about coverage for specific treatments. Dr. Taylor is a preferred provider with many major insurance plans, including but not limited to, Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO and HMO, HealthLink, Health Alliance, Medicare, Aetna, Coventry Healthcare, CIGNA, GHP, UnitedHealthCare and the State of Illinois Healthcare plans. Please contact our office if you have questions about your insurance.

Question 8:  Will Dr. Taylor work with my other healthcare professionals?

Answer 8:  Yes. Dr. Taylor is trained to recognize risks associated with diseases that are out of the scope of our treatments.  He is a member of your healthcare team and is happy to communicate with your other healthcare providers.

Question 9: How is your office different than other chiropractic offices in the area?

Answer 9: Our office believes in overall wellness.  Along with providing chiropractic care, Dr. Taylor has created a team that specializes in massage therapy, nutritional counseling, therapeutic exercise, and fitness.   We strive to provide the best care for our patients and have individuals who can help you reach your health and fitness goals.

Question 10: Is Dr. Taylor qualified to issue orthotics?

Answer 10: Yes. Dr. Taylor is able to assess foot dysfunction and can take a mold of your feet to order orthotics.  Some insurance companies will cover orthotics.  Our office can call to see if orthotics are a covered service by your insurance plan.
